Dale Walls, TCSLEA President, (512) 554-9954 Patty Gonzales, Public Information Office, (512) 974-2395 City, public safety groups plan 9/11 memorial activities The Travis County Sheriff's Law Enforcement Association and the City of Austin in conjunction with the Austin Association of Professional Firefighters are coordinating a series of memorial events to commemorate the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. The 9/11 USA Project will consist of a firefighters memorial service, a public memorial service, a memorial parade on Congress Avenue and a candlelight vigil on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol. 9/11 USA will recognize the public safety personnel serving the Austin and Travis County community. Firefighters and police officers at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, will participate in the events. The firefighters memorial service will be from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11 at the Old Fire Training Tower on the North shore of Town Lake. The service will include a City of Austin proclamation and the ringing of a fire bell at 7:46 a.m., the time here when the first airplane hit the World Trade Center. A moment of silence will follow and the names of fallen local firefighters will be read. The Travis County Sheriff's Law Enforcement Association will host the public memorial service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Police Memorial on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol. Plans include a military color guard, rifle company, elementary school choir and comments from state and local elected officials. Two ladder companies of the Austin Fire Department will extend their ladders to form an arch in the middle of Congress Avenue for the memorial parade at 7:45 p.m. The procession will be lead by a military color guard. Every law enforcement agency, fire department and emergency medical service units in Texas will be invited to send representatives to Austin to participate. A long line of emergency response vehicles will travel silently up Congress Avenue with the vehicles' emergency lights on. The procession will end at the front gates of the State Capitol. The candlelight vigil will begin approximately 8:15 p.m. on the South steps of the Capitol. The memorial activities of Sept. 11 will end with the playing of Taps.
